Nelson is Director of Intellectual Property Management at TPL. Nelson has extensive experience counseling domestic and international clients in all aspects of patent due diligence, enforcement, defense, trade secrets, licensing, and negotiations.

Prior to joining TPL, Nelson was an attorney for nearly ten years in Howrey LLP’s Intellectual Property group in Washington, DC. Nelson’s practice focused on patent litigation, counseling, and patent portfolio analysis. Nelson’s litigation experience involved a wide range of technologies, including computer memory modules, call center and interactive voice response technology, wireless networking, CCD imaging, LCD displays, GPS, data buses, multi-core processors, distributed processing, and various JAVA-related technologies. This experience involved all aspects of litigation, including discovery; drafting motions, claim construction briefs, and expert reports; working with fact witnesses and experts; taking and defending numerous depositions; and court appearances. Nelson’s counseling experience includes patent portfolio evaluation, infringement and invalidity analysis, licensing, and opinion work.

Prior to his legal career, Nelson worked five years as a research scientist for Alliant Techsystems in Virginia. Nelson designed and developed systems for real-time simulation, digital signal processing, image processing, and parallel computing in radar, sonar and satellite applications. Nelson was also a software developer for the Tactical Electronic Warfare Division of the Naval Research Laboratory.

Nelson is admitted to practice before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and the District of Columbia and Maryland bars.

Nelson holds the following degrees: J.D. – George Washington University (1999); M.S. Electrical Engineering – George Washington University (with honors, 1995); B.S. Electrical Engineering – George Washington University (magna cum laude, 1991).
